William Furman

William S. Furman, 85, of South Orange died Jan. 28, 2015. He was born in Yonkers, NY, and moved to South Orange in 1940. 

Mr. Furman was the principal partner in Furman & McDonagh, which specialized in the development of financial and insurance programs for individuals, employee groups, and corporations. 

He graduated from Columbia High School, Maplewood, and New York University at the Heights. 

He was a captain in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. 

He served on many community boards and professional associations, including Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest and several of its subcommittees, the Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest, American Red Cross, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and the American Jewish Committee. He was a benefactor of the UJA Benefit Concert and was a life trustee of New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, having served on its board and executive committee for many years. 

He was a member of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills and Mountain Ridge Country Club in Westfield.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; two daughters, Alice Furman (Hugh) Rovit and Margaret L. Furman; his son, Richard Furman (Michele Silverstein); and five grandchildren. 

Services were held Jan. 30 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Short Hills.
