Why vouchers?
I am writing in regard to the article “State Senate panel advances vouchers system” (Jan. 27).
In the more than 20 years they have been around, not a single voucher district has demonstrated any significant or consistent improvement in student performance over their public school counterparts. So why are we so anxious to divert tax dollars from the public schools? Governor Christie’s proposal amounts to little more than a subsidy to middle class families who would like to send their children to a non-public school.
Constitutional issues aside, this is no time to divert funds from our public schools, which are already facing severe financial constraints.
