Why Left is right

Why Left is right

Jared Silverman asks “Are Jewish liberals out of step with America?” (Nov. 11) for having voted, once again, liberal and Democrat. He quotes Norman Podhoretz who has written that liberalism, for Jews, “has for all practical purposes superseded Judaism and become a religion in its own right.” That may very well be because Judaism teaches us to be caring, compassionate, and sympathetic to the less able, thus the continuing Jewish vote on the liberal side.

Silverman quotes a college friend who put an amusing twist on a poem by Rudyard Kipling which actually states, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…then, my son, you will be a man.” Maybe Jewish Americans have it right and it’s the American majority that “doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation.”

Joining forces with those who would fight against reinstating a tax on the wealthiest among us to help at this time of serious financial stress, dismantling the health care bill leaving millions of children without health insurance, tampering with Social Security, etc., was not an agenda that appealed to the majority of Jewish voters. Again Kipling, “If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you…” then maybe it’s the liberal minority that has it right.
