Walter Meyers

Dr. Walter Meyers, 91, of Boca Raton, Fla., died March 13, 2017. Born in Newark, he lived in West Orange for many years before moving to Boca Raton.

Dr. Meyers was a veterinarian who founded Essex Animal Hospital in Bloomfield in 1958 and practiced there for 35 years. 

He received his undergraduate degree from Upsala College and his veterinary degree from University of the Philippines.

He graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark. 

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and received numerous awards, including a Purple Heart for his combat efforts in the Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes. He was recently awarded The Legion of Honor, France’s highest military honor, for his efforts in France during the war.

He was a longtime member of B’nai Shalom in West Orange and a member of Cedar Hill Country Club. He also did volunteer work for the Friends of Animals and ASCPA.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Corinne (Miller); his sons, Doug (Ellen) of Warren and Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and Ken (Lauren) of Warren and New York City; five grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Sine of Boynton Beach, Fla.

Services were held March 19 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Maplewood.
