Sylvia Schwartz
Sylvia “Chuch” Schwartz (Galuskin) of Maplewood died Oct. 6, 2011. She was born in New York City, grew up in Newark, and lived in Maplewood for 58 years.
She graduated from Central High School in Newark, where she was editor of her senior yearbook.
In 1942, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and spent two years stationed at Los Alamos, NM, on the Manhattan Project as secretary to the chief engineer overseeing construction of the facility’s laboratories.
She was a past president and longtime member of the Maplewood-South Orange chapter of B’nai B’rith Women (now Jewish Women International), serving as ad journal editor for over 32 years.
Predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Morris Schwartz, in 2007, and her sister Jill Gordon five weeks prior, she is survived by her daughter, Shelley Schwartz Hargrove; her son, Steven; and a grandson.
Services were held Oct. 10 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to JWI’s Maplewood-South Orange chapter.
