Sylvia Barr

Sylvia Barr (Entenberg), 94, of Linden died Oct. 24, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, she moved to Linden when she was two months old, residing there for her entire life.

Mrs. Barr was a founding member of Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim in Cranford and honored as the 1991 Sisterhood Woman of the Year for her numerous contributions to the congregation. A life member of Linden/Rahway Hadassah, she was recognized as its 2003 Woman of the Year. She was also very active in the Hilda Gould chapter of Deborah, serving as its president from 2006 to 2013 as well as being an active member of its fund-raising maintenance committee. Her civic involvement included participation in the reading program for kindergarten children at Linden’s Deerfield School #9, which led to her being honored in 1997 as Linden’s Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year.

Predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Samuel, she is survived by her son, Louis (Kate) of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Sherrie (Philip) of East Lansing, Mich., and Sharlene of Linden; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 26 with arrangements by Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, Westfield.
