St. Louis survivor
A friend e-mailed me Gabe Kahn’s “Testing the waters” (March 16). I was also on the St. Louis and was 11 years old so I have vivid memories of the ship. My mother, sister, and I ended up in France. But my father, who was already in Cuba after being incarcerated in Buchenwald, got us visas a second time and in January 1940 we arrived in Havana.
In 1941 we came to the United States. I had a 54-year career at Rutgers University and now live with my wife, three children, and 10 grand-children in Boston and the District of Columbia.
