Spiritual journey
I am one of the five Newark teachers who will always be grateful to have experienced such a professional and spiritual journey with teachers from many countries (“Local teachers join Holocaust education trip in Europe,” Aug. 17). Every year I choose a Holocaust-themed novel to teach a unit on contemporary topics. This year, I incorporated one family story from Centropa.org into my lesson plan. However, after traveling and seeing history come alive in front of our eyes throughout the streets of Budapest and Belgrade, I know I am better equipped with powerful and inspiring tools to bring some of these stories from Jewish families presented in this amazing website into my classroom. Why Newark? The answer is in every classroom. We need to create dialogue, ask questions, and find solutions to repair our communities.
