Solomon Geist

Solomon Mortimer (Morty) Geist, 89, of Springfield died Oct. 21, 2017. He was born in the Bronx. 

Mr. Geist was a professional musician and a teacher. He toured with several big bands and played locally throughout the New York area. He was also a teacher and the supervisor of performing arts for the Township of Union Public Schools. 

He graduated from The Juilliard School and earned a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Renee (Perlman); two sons, Alan (Shellie Wiener) of San Francisco and Eric of Silver Spring, Md.; his daughter, Michele (Jonathan) Parsonnet of Silver Spring; a brother, Herman of Armonk, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren. 

Services were held Oct. 25 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Homeside Hospice, WNYC, or Local 802 Musician’s Emergency Relief Fund.
