Shocked by backlash
I could not agree with Gabe Kahn more regarding his Garden State of Mind column “The scourge of gun violence, once again” (Aug. 8). I’m frankly shocked at the extent of backlash he described following publication of his column on the Parkland, Fla., shootings (“The gun problem’s plain to see,” March 15, 2018), having always believed that the overwhelming majority of American Jews have been in favor of stronger gun regulation, even before the Tree of Life episode in Pittsburgh.
Furthermore, as a retired Army officer I don’t believe there is any reason why civilians need to own military-style assault rifles; they’re intended for use on the battlefield but have been the weapon of choice in most of the recent mass shootings.
Thanks for an excellent column on this most important subject.
