Shirley Tabenkin
Shirley Chassen Tabenkin, 93, of West Caldwell died Sept. 19, 2013. She was born and raised in Queens and resided in Tupper Lake, NY, and Peekskill, NY, before moving to West Caldwell in 1960.
Mrs. Tabenkin taught the sixth grade, then fourth grade at the Adlai Stevenson School in Fairfield until her retirement in 1985.
She graduated from the first class of Queens College in 1941, and attained two master’s degrees, one from Teachers College at Columbia University, the other from William Paterson College.
She was active in her synagogue, Congregation Agudath Israel in Caldwell, in their senior activities, and celebrated her bat mitzva after age 80. She was also a life member of Hadassah and was active in the Crane’s Mill community in West Caldwell.
Predeceased by her husband, Philip, and her son, Mark, she is survived by her daughter, Devora (Robert) Gronauer; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Tabenkin; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 22 with arrangements by Jewish Memorial Chapel, Clifton. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Agudath Israel’s Senior Adult Lounge Fund.
