Shirley Slomovitz
Shirley Rae Slomovitz (Gott), 94, of Maplewood died Jan. 4, 2016. She was born in Bayonne, where she resided before moving to Maplewood 10 years ago.
In addition to being a homemaker and raising three sons, Mrs. Slomovitz helped manage Ben’s from Avenue C, a retail store in Bayonne. The business was established in the early 1900s by her in-laws, Ben and Sophie Slomovitz. She and her husband, Leo, continued to run the business until the mid-1980s.
She was a graduate of Bayonne High School and the Mandel School for Medical Technicians.
She was active as a volunteer at Bayonne Hospital. She was a member of Bayonne Jewish Community Center and Temple Emanu-El and a life member of Hadassah. She was an active participant at Winchester Gardens, her residence in Maplewood.
Predeceased by her husband, Leo, whom she married in 1941, and a grandson, Evan Slomovitz, she is survived by three sons, Jay (Iris) of Springfield, Kenneth (Cindy) of Buffalo, NY, and Michael (Toby) of New Hope, Pa.; a brother, Julian Gott; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 6 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
