Shirley Rubinstein
Shirley Rubinstein (Hasburg), 92, of Somerset died Sept. 30, 2012. Born in Newark, she resided in Union, East Orange, West Orange, and South Orange before moving to Somerset three years ago.
Mrs. Rubinstein was employed by Dun & Bradstreet in Newark as a secretary for five years before starting a family.
She was active in several organizations, including the Mental Health Association of Essex County, Girl Scouts of America, the Vose Avenue Tenants Association, Natural Hygiene of New Jersey, Concerned Families for Better Mental Health, and the Schizophrenia Foundation of New Jersey. She was also a life member of Deborah and B’nai B’rith Women, a member of Young Israel in West Orange, and a patron member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 309. During World War II she was a USO hostess at the Continental Ballroom, Newark, where she met her husband of 62 years, Irving.
She was an avid arts and crafts hobbyist.
Predeceased by her husband in 2008, she is survived by her son, Boruch of Brooklyn; two daughters, Nancy Berkenfeld of Edison and Arlene Lieberman of Millburn; two sisters, Miriam Fink of Cherry Hill and Gladys Glassman of Oakhurst; and two grandsons.
Services were held Oct. 3 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, 49 Veronica Ave., Suite 206, Somerset, NJ 08873.
