Shirley Gross

Shirley Gross (Hiller), 85, of Edison died Dec. 12, 2010. She was born in New York City, lived in Brooklyn and Jersey City before moving to Edison in 1969.

Mrs. Gross was a math teacher at Dickinson High School in Jersey City for 29 years, retiring in 1987. She also was adviser to the school’s knitting/crocheting club.

During World War II, as a mathematician, she served as a contract administrator in the Office of Procurement, and worked with the original computers for the Dept. of the Navy in the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

She graduated from Brooklyn College with a BS in math and from Jersey City State College with an MA in math education in 1970.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Stanley; two daughters, Merrill Hodder of Rockaway and Paula Gross of Richmond, Calif.; a sister, Betty Horn of Lake City, Fla.; and a granddaughter.

Services were held Dec. 19 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
