Shirley Bloom
Shirley (“Sonya”) Bloom (Pivnick) of West Orange died Aug. 7, 2014. Born in the Ukraine, she immigrated to the United States in 1921 and was raised in Newark. She moved to South Orange in 1948 and also maintained a home in Vermont.
Mrs. Bloom devoted her adult life as a volunteer for Hadassah, joining the original Newark chapter in 1943. She later became president of the South Orange chapter and president of the Northern NJ Region and served on the national board. In January 1962, she was a member of a Hadassah mission to Israel that met with then-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. She was also present, with artist Marc Chagall, at the dedication of his windows in the Abell Synagogue of Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem.
She was a graduate of South Side High School, Newark.
She was an avid skier and belonged to the 70+ Ski Club.
Predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Milton, and her son, Barry, she is survived by her daughter, Carrie Weiner of West Orange; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were held Aug. 10 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
