Sherry Gold

Sherry Shifra Gold (Gerber), 92, of Fair Lawn died April 6, 2019. She was born in Utiyan, Lithuania, and, after her mother’s death when she was three, lived with relatives in Lithuania and Poland until she was 11, arriving in New York City in 1937, where her father had been living. She grew up in New Jersey, where she was active in sports and youth groups and worked at her father’s Montclair candy store. In 1950, she married Melvin L. Gold and they moved to Israel for several years. When they returned, they eventually settled in West Orange, and spent summers in Bantam Lake, Conn.

Mrs. Gold had a long social work career, during which she was the director of a local nursery school and a therapist at Jewish Family Services in both Millburn and Wayne.

She graduated from Ohio University and later earned an M.S.W. from the Wurzweiler School at Yeshiva University.

Predeceased by her husband of 64 years in 2014, she is survived by three sons, Charles (Anne Kohn) of New York City, Neil of Fair Lawn, and Ronald (Betsy August Gold) of Saddle River; her daughter, Nina (Raviv) Ron of Fair Lawn; a sister, Charlotte Gerber Turner; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held April 7 with arrangements by Gutterman & Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, Hackensack. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Association for Developmental Disabilities, 50 Eisenhower Drive, Paramus, N.J. 07652; Young Judaea, 575 Eighth Ave., New York, N.Y., 10018; or The National Yiddish Theatre-Folksbiene, 36 Battery Place, New York, N.Y. 10280.
