Shavuot happenings

Shavuot — commemorating the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the holiday of the “first fruits” — begins at sundown on Saturday, June 11, and continues through nightfall on Monday, June 13. Many synagogues hold services and traditional late-night study sessions. The following are among the events being held:

Chabad Center of Northwest NJ will sponsor a holiday gathering, including a reading of the Ten Commandments from the Torah, at the center in Rockaway on Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m. A dairy luncheon will be served, followed by a children’s ice cream party. 

Chabad will also sponsor a “Stay As Long As You Like All Night Study Session” on Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 p.m., at its Educational Center in Rockaway. Refreshments will be served throughout the night. 

Shavuot programs will also be held in Mountain Lakes on Sunday, June 12. For further information, call Rabbi Levi Dubinsky at 973-551-1898.

Chabad of Randolph will hold late-night Torah learning at 48 West Hanover Ave. on Saturday, June 11, 11 p.m.-1 a.m.

A reading of the Ten Commandments will be held on Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m., followed at noon by a dairy lunch and ice cream bar. RSVP by June 9 to

Congregation Beth Hatikvah, Summit, will hold an evening of learning preceded by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Sponsored by the synagogue’s Chai Mitzvah group, the teachings and discussions will focus on Gratitude, Mindfulness, and the Relationship between the Individual and Community.
