Ruth Smith
Ruth Smith (Lerner), 78, of New Providence died Feb. 16, 2019. Born in Newark, she also lived in Cranford and Scotch Plains.
Mrs. Smith served as executive director of the Westfield Senior Citizen Housing complex for over 21 years. A recognized expert in her field, she received numerous awards for her dedication to the senior population, including the “Dr. Herbert Shore Outstanding Mentor” award for her excellent service for seniors. Her portrait is in the Westfield Senior Citizen Room in honor of her long service to the organization.
She attended Weequahic High School, Newark, and Kean College.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; two sons, Matthew (Melinda) of Hillsborough and Adam (Tara) of New Providence; two brothers, Larry Lerner of Warren and Herb Lerner of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Barbara Blumberg of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 19 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Deborah Hospital Heart and Lung Institute.
