Rose Spier
Rose Spier, 87, of Maplewood died Dec. 7, 2015. Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1928, she fled Germany with her parents after enduring Kristallnacht, and lived in Amsterdam for one year before immigrating to the United States, settling in Newark.
Mrs. Spier taught German and Spanish in both the Elizabeth and Millburn school systems, and retired after 30 years in the Millburn system. She received many teaching awards over the years, and many of her students pursued German-language careers.
She received a BA from New York University in language and a master’s degree from University of Florida.
She and her husband helped many immigrants make the transition to life in the United States.
Predeceased by her husband, Michael, in 2010, she is survived by two sons, Bernard and Norman, and two grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 9 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
