Roda Shafranova, 98, of West Orange died July 9, 2013. Born in Krolevitz, Ukraine, she came to the United States in 1978, first settling in Irvington and then Newark’s Ivy Hill section before moving to West Orange in 2011.
Mrs. Shafranova had worked for some time after school in St. Petersburg as a dressmaker. After immigrating to the United States she began to write poetry and in 1988 a collection of her poems, Sunset Looking In My Window, was published. She continued writing until she died.
In Russia she attended the University in Irkutsk, Siberia, studying mathematics and physics.
She is survived by her daughter, Sophia (Eugene) Mogendovich of East Hanover; a granddaughter, Julia Aharonev; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held July 11 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield.
