Robert Slater
Robert “Bobby” E. Slater, 78, of Mendham died July 21, 2018. Born in Newark, he resided in Short Hills and Livingston before moving to Mendham in 2001.
Mr. Slater was chairman of LRF Slater Companies, Inc. of Livingston. He was previously executive vice president at Channel Home Centers in Whippany. He served both as a commissioner of the Essex County Improvement Authority and New Jersey State Lottery Commission.
He was a 1958 graduate of Columbia High School in Maplewood, where he became a New Jersey state diving champion, and was inducted into the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1962, he graduated from Lehigh University, where he became an Eastern United States diving champion.
He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964.
He was a lifelong member of Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston.
An avid golfer, he was a member of Green Brook, Crestmont, and Essex County country clubs.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Beverly; his children, Allyson Price, Richard Slater, E.J. Slater, Danielle Slater, Lauren Swigert, and Teddy Swagert; a brother, Fredric Slater; and six grandchildren.
Services were held July 23 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
