Robert Lapidus

Robert Bert Lapidus, 86, of Clark died Feb. 14, 2019.

Before beginning a teaching career, Mr. Lapidus was vice president in his father’s business, Atlantic Lacquer Mfg. Co. in Irvington, from 1957 to 1970. He then was a teacher of business subjects at Edison High School from 1970 until retiring in 1995. During this time he was selected as Teacher/Scholar for the NJ Governor’s school in 1991. He served as a delegate to the national convention of the National Education Association, and participated in the Hands Across the Water teacher exchange program during which he served as a visiting teacher in Sweden for two weeks. Following his retirement, he served as a mentor to students doing their student teaching practicum.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in education from Montclair State College in 1970.

He was a member of Temple Beth O’r of Clark, the Clark lodge of B’nai B’rith, Union County Democratic Committee, and the Clark Township 125th Year Anniversary Celebration Committee. He was a trustee of the Clark Public Library, served as president of the Clark Scholarship Fund, and was also a contributing columnist for the Clark Eagle.

He is survived by his wife, Nathalee (Simon); three sons, Marc (Jen Schenkel) of Brooklyn, Steve (Jennifer) of Queens, and James of Highland Park; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 17 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Federation.
