Robert Derfler
Robert Derfler, 70, of Short Hills died May 21, 2017. Born in Jersey City, he spent his formative years in New York City, later moving back to Jersey City. He lived in Short Hills for 41 years.
Along with his family Mr. Derfler owned Royaltone Inc., a photofinishing business, and the Camera Craft chain of stores. He founded Jersey Emergency Medical Training, a CPR, first response, and first aid safety training company. He also worked for Atlantic Health Systems out of Overlook Hospital in a similar capacity.
He graduated with a degree in business administration from C.W. Post College, where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity.
He served as a medic in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War.
He was actively involved in the local community, where he served on the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad and had a leadership role in the township Little League program for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Magnes); his daughter, Melissa; and his son, Neil (Audrey).
Services were held May 23 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Barnabas Health Organization Hospice or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
