Robert Barish

Dr. Robert “Robbie” J. Barish of Manhattan died Aug. 21, 2019. He was born in 1946 in Newark.

An advocate for education about the dangers of in-flight radiation, Dr. Barish was an associate professor of radiology at New York University Medical School and chief radiotherapy physicist at the Cancer Institute of St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens.

He graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark and received a Ph.D. in Medical Physics from University of London.

He played oboe and English horn in the Riverside Orchestra, the Doctors Orchestra Society, and Mannes College of Music Community Orchestra. He also was part of the live radio team at WBAI in New York and Capital Radio in London and served on the board of the Hemophilia Association of New York.

He is survived by a brother, Larry (Sharon) Barish; two nieces, Lauren Barish Handelman and Amy Halem Gottesman; a nephew, Dan Halem; and his companion, Kelly Sixt.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, New York, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Hemophilia Association of New York.
