Rhoda Kern

Rhoda Kern (Sandler), 92, of Tinton Falls died June 24, 2014. Born in Newark, she was a longtime resident of Oakhurst and resided in Tinton Falls since 2007.

Mrs. Kern taught first grade at the Deal School for 31 years, retiring in 1992.

She graduated from Irvington High School in 1939 and from Newark State Teachers College in 1943. 

Active in community service, she volunteered for Head Start and the Monmouth YM-YWHA’s first senior citizen group. She tutored Russian immigrants and delivered “Meals on Wheels” well into her 80s. She was a member of Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon, for over 50 years, where she was active in sisterhood and served on its board and on many committees, receiving a Woman of Valor award in 2004. She was an active member of NJEA, Hadassah, ORT, and the JCC in West Deal.

Predeceased by her husband, Norton, in 1995, she is survived by her daughter, Karen Kern of New Orleans; her son, Lee (Susan) of Mebane, NC; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

Services were held June 27 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean.
