Pricey celebration

I remember that the community-wide Israel Independence Day celebration used to be free so all lovers of Israel could attend. Now the Yom Ha’atzmaut concert, featuring the Idan Reichl Project, is $25 for students, $50 for adults, and $136 for patrons (with an additional charge for parking). This makes it an expensive night for many of us.

Isn’t one of the goals of this event to have the entire Jewish community show up in unity with Israel? Plus the Israel Independence Day celebration has traditionally been held at the JCC or a synagogue — Jewish venues, not at a local university. What happened?
