Plenty to fear

Like Andrew Silow-Carroll, I also received a fund-raising e-mail from David Harris of the American Jewish Committee (“Ask Dr. Difference: Fear edition,” Jan. 6). As executive director of AJC, Harris’ job is, I assume, to raise funds. Assuming his start date was in or around 1990, I think Harris is correct in stating that the situation for Jews and for Israel today is worse than it has been in the past 20 years. You unfairly ask, however, “What’s the difference between today and, say, 1939?”

Are we grateful that it is not like it was in 1939? Of course, but let’s not underestimate the danger of Iran and its nuclear plans, and the Palestinian stalemate, and synagogues and community centers being targeted by anti-Semites, and the ongoing attempt at delegitimization of Israel.

If that’s not enough, stay tuned for reports out of the UN when the Durban Conference takes place.
