Phyllis Fries
Phyllis Fries (Kracher) of West Orange died Oct. 21, 2013. Born in Cieszyna in Galicia Poland, she survived the Holocaust by hiding in a stable for two years on the farm of a family friend. Her mother Sophia, father Hiel, sister Mala and brother Monek were all killed during the war. She came to the United States in 1948 and also had lived in Clifton, Newark, and in Maplewood for 30 years.
Mrs. Fries worked at JayDor Corp. in Millburn for 20 years until her retirement in 1995.
Predeceased by her husband, Leo, in 1973, another survivor from Poland, she is survived by two sons, Howard (Elaine Stikas) of Herndon, Va., and Henry (Monica) of Allentown, Pa.; four grandchildren; and her best friend of over 60 years, Irene Bau.
Services were held Oct. 25 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous.
