Phyllis Dutwin

Phyllis Dutwin of Wickford, R.I., died June 25, 2019. Born in Newark, she lived in South Orange before moving to East Greenwich, R.I., in 1975 and to Wickford in 1994.

Mrs. Dutwin authored educational books that included “Grammar in Plain English,” a manual written for adults preparing for the GED, for ESL students preparing for the TOEFL or TOEIC exams, and others looking to improve their skills in basic English usage; it is now in its fourth edition. Other works include “Easy Grammar Step by Step,” “The ABCs of Evaluation,” “Writing the Easy Way,” and “English the Easy Way.”

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree from the Kean University in reading and English, and a second master’s from the University of Rhode Island in business and English.

She is survived by her husband, Marcel; her son, David (Betsy) of Merion Station, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Schachter of Riverside, R.I.; and two grandsons.

Services were held June 27 at Temple B’nai Abraham Memorial Park, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holocaust Education Center of Rhode Island, 401 Elmgrove Ave., Providence, R.I. 02906.
