Paul Shapiro
Paul Shapiro, 94, of Westfield died Feb. 17, 2013. Born in Newark, he lived in Westfield for most of his life.
Mr. Shapiro worked as a junior executive, a buyer for Bamberger’s and other department stores, and as an international buyer and importer of juvenile furniture and bicycles. After his retirement he continued to serve as a consultant.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts.
He was one of the founders of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, and was actively involved in all aspects of temple life. He was honored by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies for leading one of the most successful campaigns in their history.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Shirley Black Shapiro; two sons, Rick (Debbie) of Fanwood and Lester (Vicki) of Hightstown; his daughter, Joyce Shapiro Gordon of Massachusetts; two brothers, Harold of Millburn and Seymour of New York City; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 20 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, Paramus; or Hadassah, 50 W. 58th St., New York, NY 10019.
