Norman Shaer

Norman Shaer, 77, of Surf City died April 20, 2014. He was born in Boston and lived in Locust for nearly 40 years. He enjoyed winters in South Beach, Fla., and summers in Long Beach Island. He became a permanent resident of Surf City and was an active board member for the town.

Mr. Shaer had a long career in technology, which began at Bell Laboratories in the 1960s; he retired as executive director for advance technology at Lucent in 2005. After his retirement he remained a consultant for Lucent and went on to become vice president of business development for Benevue.

He graduated from Tufts University, where he was president of his fraternity.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Florence; three daughters, Nancy Bilow of Shrewsbury, Susan (Steven) Gardella of Shrewsbury, and Susan (Jim) of Ypsilanti, Mich.; his son, Bruce (Kate) Bilow of Oceanport; a sister, Verna Trager of Needham, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

Services were held April 23 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean.
