No laughing matter
I have just finished “Finkler: or The Ambiguities” (Feb. 3) and am almost finished with Howard Jacobson’s The Finkler Question, which I am reading for my book club here in Israel.
I wonder if the praise the book is getting is because it won the Booker Prize and no one is willing to contradict the choice. If one reads the NJ Jewish News article about the situation at Rutgers (“Survivor: Zionists turn Holocaust into ‘religion’”), how can anyone come to the conclusion that this book is “comic?” It not only is not comic, it gives those who are actively trying to delegitimize the State of Israel a platform to be able to say, “even the Jews agree with us.”
