NJ judge presents The Brandeis Brief
THE HONORABLE PHILLIP S. Carchman, senior judge of the Appellate Division of N.J. Superior Court, will share insights into the career of legal innovator Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:45 p.m. at B’nai Shalom, West Orange.
Brandeis was the first attorney to use social science, rather than legal precedent alone, to successfully argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Louis D. Brandeis was not only an extraordinary justice, he was an extraordinary man,” said Carchman. “He understood that the betterment of men and women could only be achieved when the law reflected social reform and innovation. He was also an early leader of the Zionist movement in America and advocated strongly for the creation of a Jewish homeland in then-Palestine.”
Rabbi Robert Tobin, spiritual leader of B’nai Shalom, will participate in the discussion following Carchman’s presentation. The rabbi will focus on the Jewish values implicit in Brandeis’s approach to the law.
The lecture and dessert reception is free. Register at bnaishalom.net/events.php or call 973-731-0160.
