Ner Tamid film fest to focus on immigration

IMMIGRATION — Its Challenges and Its Blessings will be the theme of the 2018 TNT Film Festival, a weekend of screenings and discussions, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 2-4, at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield.

Friday, Nov. 2, following erev Shabbat service at 8 p.m.

“Sin Pais” (“Without Country”) — This short documentary explores the complex and emotional journey surrounding a deportation that separates parents and children. A discussion following the film will be led by Ner Tamid’s Rabbi Marc Katz.

Saturday, Nov. 3, 6 p.m.

Interactive “Fiddler on the Roof” — The screening of the 1971 musical starring Topol will include a “comfort food” dinner and themed decor and props, while audience members — who are asked to come dressed as an Anatevka villager — watch and sing along. Attendees may sign up to bring a potato or noodle kugel or a dessert.

Sunday, Nov. 4, 3:30 p.m.

For kids: The animated feature “An American Tale” tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz and his family, who escape the Cos-Cats (aka Cossacks) in the Old Country and immigrate to the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Water, juice, and popcorn will be available.

For adults: A screening of “Clinica de Migrantes,” about a volunteer-run clinic that provides free medical care to undocumented immigrants. The documentary’s filmmaker, Maxim Poxdorovkin, will take part in a discussion led by congregants Raphaela Neihausen and Thom Powers, film and festival producers.
