Myron A. Levey of Essex Fells, chairman of the board of Paper Mart, Inc., died April 5, 2011. He was born in Newark in 1928.

At age 11, Mr. Levey began working at Paper Mart, performing janitorial and odd jobs for his father during the weekend. In 1939, he began to work more frequently, earning a weekly salary of $48 by the summer of 1947. He helped launch the company’s growth pattern over the next 60 years. Today, Paper Mart, headquartered in East Hanover, is a 200,000-square-foot facility.

He graduated from Newark’s Weequahic High School in 1946. He attended Upsala College in East Orange and then enrolled in classes at Rutgers University at night while working at Paper Mart during the day. He graduated from Rutgers with a degree in business administration and a major in accounting.

He was a major donor to the United Jewish Appeal Campaign of MetroWest NJ and a 50-year member of B’nai Shalom in West Orange.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Heidi (Lasky); two daughters, Linda Reichler and Melissa Berger; three sons, Howard Levey, Jerold Levey, and Jonathan Block; 11 grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.

Services were held April 8 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to any organization supporting pancreatic cancer or heart and stroke research.
