Morton Salkind

Morton Salkind, 82, of Denville died Oct. 4, 2014. 

Mr. Salkind was a well-known builder/developer and politician. He was twice elected mayor of Marlboro Township and represented 22 municipalities from Monmouth County in the New Jersey General Assembly, where he was known for holding the line on transit fare increases. He built hundreds of residences, specializing in active adult communities such as Fox Hills. 

While he held many positions in local, county, and state government, he was best-known for his state work in public utilities and transportation. He was the chairman of the NJ General Assembly Standing Committee on Transportation and was a long-term member of the Secaucus and Marlboro planning boards. He served 15 years as chairman of municipal and regional utilities authorities in Monmouth and Hudson counties and six years as vice chairman of the Hudson County Utilities Authority. He served for two years as the deciding vote on the NJ Transportation Trust Fund Authority and six years as State Lottery Commissioner. He was the author of many roadway and mass transit improvements and medical malpractice laws. 

He served two years on active duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and six years in the army reserves. 

Predeceased by his daughter, Susan, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carole; his son, Steven; two nephews, Phillip Rosenthal and Edward Siegel; and two nieces, Jennifer Caso and Nina Bauman. 

Services were held Oct. 6 with arrangements by Gutterman Brothers, Lake Hiawatha.
