Morton Leiwant

Morton Leiwant of Short Hills died Jan. 4, 2014. He was born and raised in Newark, lived in Union as a child, and later resided in Newark and East Orange.

Mr. Leiwant was known as “Lefty” after a character in a Philip Roth novel modeled after him. He achieved prominence as a football player locally and in the state. Earlier in his youth he had some success as a Golden Glove Boxer. As a result of his love of horses, he, as part of a group, owned several successful racing horses, one of whom won the Eclipse Award as the best two year old in the country in the 1980s, Lord Avie.

Predeceased by his wife, Anne, he is survived by two sisters, Audrey Isler and Barbara Garfinkel; five nieces, Robin Furrey, Lynn Spitzer, Beth Layne, Leslie Petty, and Meredith Savage; and two nephews, David Spitzer and Paul Garfinkel.

Services were held Jan. 6 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
