Mortimer Gershman

Mortimer “Mort” Gershman, 89, of Morristown died Nov. 2, 2015. He was born in Providence, RI, and grew up in Elizabeth.

Mr. Gershman spent most of his professional life in the New York area. He had a career of more than 40 years in the timepiece industry, with senior management-level experience with watch industry leaders such as Seiko Corp. of America, Zenith Movado Time Corp., Time Products Corp. of Elgin National Industries, and Lorus Products, an affiliate of Hattori Corp. of America (Seiko). Prior to that, he also held executive positions in the cosmetic and fragrance industries, serving in sales administration with Revlon.

He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, Rutgers University, and New York Management Institute.

He served briefly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. 

A volunteer for more than 35 years with various organizations, he played a key role in the discussions surrounding the consolidation of Elizabeth General Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital that resulted in the creation of Trinitas Regional Medical Center. He lent his abilities to the board’s finance, joint conference, and ethics committees. He also volunteered for Jewish Family Service Agency of Eastern Union County and Elizabethtown Healthcare Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Temple B’nai Israel, and the 24 Karat Club of New York City. He furthered the fund-raising efforts of United Jewish Appeal, Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline; his daughter, Pamela (Jorge); his son, Mark (Nancy); and three grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 4 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
