Miriam Less
Miriam (Mia) Less, 86, of Maplewood died April 16, 2017. Born Mia Maier in Altenkunstadt, Oberfranken, Germany, she and her parents left the country in 1937 and immigrated to America through the help of a distant relative, Edward Kramer of Metuchen. They settled in Newark. She later lived in East Orange and in Millburn for 50 years before moving to Maplewood in 2005.
She graduated from Arts High School in Newark in 1949. She studied at Parsons School of Design.
She was a member of Congregation B’nai Israel in Millburn. She provided active support to the Red Cross, National Council of Jewish Women, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, and World ORT. She also volunteered at South Mountain elementary school, Millburn, and volunteered with young Jewish Russian immigrants in East Orange, as well as did camera work for a local public cable TV show. She engaged in many sewing projects, and earned special recognition as a volunteer docent at the Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange.
Predeceased by her husband, John, who also fled with his family from Germany, in 2011; she is survived by her daughter, Deborah; her son, Steven; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held April 21 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
