Melitta Schmidt

Melitta Schmidt, 96, of Union died Feb. 11, 2018. Born in Germany, she came to the United States to escape the Nazis in 1938. She lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Union 57 years ago. 

Mrs. Schmidt worked as a shoe model and salesperson for Bamberger’s in Newark. Later, after moving to Union, she started her own women’s clothing store out of her basement in 1966. She later expanded her client base and moved into larger headquarters, first on Stuyvesant Avenue and then on Morris Avenue. She owned Melitta Schmidt Profile of Fashion in Union Center, celebrating 25 years in business in 1991. 

She was involved for many years with a local chapter of B’nai B’rith. 

Predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 2016, and a grandchild, Jonathan Schmidt, she is survived by her son, Gary (Delia) of Branchburg; her daughter, Cindy Schoenhaar of Hamilton; a sister, Trudy Farina of Lakewood; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services were held Feb. 13 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish National Fund.
