Marjorie Burstein Weissman

Marjorie Burstein Weissman, 86, of Old Tappan died March 21, 2011. She was born in Newark.

With certification to teach kindergarten through 12th grade, Mrs. Weissman was the first appointed Jewish teacher in the South Mountain School, South Orange, school system, and helped to design the kindergarten program.

She graduated from Upsala College and completed her MA equivalency at Newark State Teacher’s College.

Key in starting the YES group at the Y, she was social secretary for many years. Other affiliations included the JCC of Bergen County, Temple Emanuel in Woodcliff Lake, Order of Eastern Star Chapter Temple #62, Hadassah, NEAR, AARP.

At age 50, Mrs. Weissman married her husband, Martin, who proposed to her on their first date. They were married for 22 years.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by two stepsons; her brother, Herbert; and four grandchildren.
