Marion Holdowsky

Marion Sarah Holdowsky (Hinden), 97, of Highland Park died March 28, 2016. Born in Schenectady, NY, she resided in Washington, DC; Chevy Chase, Md.; Franklin Township; and finally Highland Park, where she lived for the past 54 years.

Mrs. Holdowsky was a head reference librarian at the U.S. Army Medical Library in Washington, DC, during and after World War II. 

She graduated from Albany Teacher’s College (now SUNY Albany) in 1940, where she studied library science. 

After earning a master’s degree in education at the age of 59 at Rutgers University in 1978, she developed an English as a Second Language curriculum for the Highland Park school system and served as an ESL teacher there between 1968 and 1984.

She served as a mentor to newly arrived immigrants over the past 40 years.

Predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Simon, in 1999, she is survived by three sons, Michael (Marcy) of Grantham, NH, Kenneth of Highland Park, and Jonathan of Brookline, Mass.; her daughter, Ellen (Yaakov/Jack) Macales of Rehovot, Israel; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held March 30 with arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah or the sisterhood of Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth.
