Lotte Schindel

Lotte Schindel, 89, of Monroe Township died Nov. 17, 2011. A Holocaust survivor, she was born in 1922 in Aachen, Germany, escaped to England in 1939, and trained as a nurse at St. James Hospital in London through World War II.

In 1947 she arrived in the United States. She lived in Maplewood from 1954 until 1987 before moving to Chatham and then to Monroe in 1999.

She worked as a head nurse at Orange Memorial Hospital/Hospital Center at Orange from 1966 until her retirement in 1988.

After her retirement, she was a hospice volunteer and later was a volunteer and ambassador at Monroe Village.

Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Louis, and an infant son, Steven, she is survived by three sons, Lawrence of Bryantown, Md., Paul of Lawrenceville, and Andrew of Belmont, Maine; a brother, Kenneth Rapley of Washington, DC; and five grandsons.

Services were held Nov. 26 with arrangements by Riverside Memorial Chapels, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC.
