Lionel Levey
Lionel M. Levey of Short Hills died May 20, 2019. He was born in 1921 in Newark.
In 1950 Mr. Levey founded Shoe-Town, a chain that grew to hundreds of stores and became a publicly traded stock.
He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He served with distinction as a Marine in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was a philanthropist.
Predeceased by his first wife, Selma, he is survived by his wife, Sande; two daughters, Gina (Kenneth) Mandelbaum of Short Hills and Jeanne (Samuel) Jemal of New York City; a sister, Carol Greene; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Services were held May 22 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Medical Center, c/o Center for Geriatric Health and Disease Management, 95 Old Short Hills Rd., West Orange, N.J. 07052.
