Lillie Asarnow, 94, of Maplewood died Jan. 21, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, she moved to Newark as a child and later to Elizabeth before moving to Maplewood in 2000.
Mrs. Asarnow taught kindergarten, first, and second grades at the Hawthorne Avenue School in Newark. After her retirement she taught English to Russian immigrants as a volunteer.
She earned her bachelor’s degree with highest honors from Kean College at night after raising her three sons.
She was a member of Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston, for 60 years, celebrating her bat mitzva in her 70s.
Predeceased by her husband, Louis, in 1982, she is survived by three sons, Robert of Los Angeles, Elliot of Maplewood, and Brian of Eatontown; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 23 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Maplewood-Newark Hadassah.
