Leon Salz
Leon Salz, 92, of Mountainside died July 27, 2011. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Mountainside for 52 years.
Mr. Salz worked as a products development chemist in industrial oils at the Socony Vacuum Oil Company and, while there, developed several compositions that were patented. In 1950 he was selected by the Magnus Chemical Company in Garwood to form a new division of stamping, drawing, and machinery lubricants to supplement the company’s line of chemical cleaning compounds, and was eventually elected to the company’s board of directors. When Magnus Chemical merged with Ecolab, he was a corporate secretary.
He wrote numerous articles on lubricants for stamping, deep drawing, machinery, and grinding metals, and presented papers before the national meetings of the American Chemical Society, the Wire Association, and the American Society of Lubrication Engineers. ASLE honored him for his publication, “Choose your Stamping Lubricants with Care,” and he was cited in the “Metals Handbook” as a leading national authority on the subject.
He graduated from New York University and received an MS degree in chemistry in 1941 from the University of Michigan.
He was a longtime member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice; his son, Alan of Bridgewater; his daughter, Carol Person of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
Services were held July 31 with arrangements by Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home, Somerville. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Family Service of Central NJ, Elizabeth, or Temple Emanu-El’s Caring Community Fund.
