Leatrice Lieberman

Leatrice Newman Lieberman, 89, of Union died March 16, 2013. She was born in New York City and relocated to New Jersey in the 1960s, living in Union since 1968.

Mrs. Lieberman worked on Wall Street in the 1940s and later became involved in theatrical/Broadway hair design and make-up. In the 1960s she worked at the Wig Center in Elizabeth and owned a luncheonette in Newark with her husband Hyman. In the 1970s she began a career as a group life insurance agent for Bankers Life and later Metropolitan Life. For many years she was the administrator for Temple Beth El of Elizabeth, and until age 88 worked for the Dental Referral Program for the Senior Citizen’s Council of Union County.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College. In her 70s she earned a master’s degree from Kean University in gerontology.

In the 1990s she joined Temple Sha’arey Shalom of Springfield, where she held positions on the board and ritual committee. She was a member of the YM-YWHA of Union County and continued to serve on the County of Union Paratransit Committee.

Predeceased by her husband in 1970, she is survived by her daughter, Ellen Lieberman, and two grandchildren.

Services were held March 18 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Maplewood. Memorial contributions may be made Temple Sha’arey Shalom of Springfield’s “Caring Committee” or “Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund,” Center for Hope Hospice, or Doctors Without Borders.
