Kalman Lurinsky

Kalman Lurinsky, 96, of West Caldwell, formerly of Cranford, died Jan. 20, 2014. He was born in New York City and grew up in Newark and Irvington before moving to Cranford in 1956 and to West Caldwell in 2006.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Lurinsky was a menswear clothing buyer and merchandise manager for Ohrbach’s Newark and New York City stores and at several major retail chain stores.

He attended night school and received a BS in Business in Merchandising at the University of Newark (later Rutgers-Newark) in 1942.

He entered the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a captain in the 1289 Engineer Combat Battalion in the European and Pacific theaters.

He was an active member of Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim of Cranford since 1956. He was a regular attendee at the New Jersey Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and other musical and theatrical performances. He received violin training while a student at Newark’s West Side High School.

Predeceased by his wife, Doris (Teitelbaum), in 2006, he is survived by his daughter, Barbara Denner of New York City; his son, Mark (Florence) of Montclair; a sister, Frances Reich of Freehold; and two granddaughters.

Services were held Jan. 24 with arrangements by Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, Westfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim.
