Joel Kligman

Joel Kligman, 79, of Colts Neck died July 4, 2013. He was born in Newark and lived in Monmouth County since 1961.

Mr. Kligman was a self-employed builder/developer and went on to build, own, and operate two Holiday Inns in New Jersey.

He was a graduate of Rider College, where he received a full basketball scholarship.

Active in the Jewish community, he was chairman of the building committee for Temple Beth El in Oakhurst.

One of the leading thoroughbred owners and breeders in the state’s history, he was awarded the Virgil “Buddy” Raines award for his contributions to the sport of horse racing.

He was survived by his daughter, Beth Kligman Higgason of Kalispell, Mont.; three sons; Andy of Long Branch, Jeff of Hamilton Township, and David of Morristown; and three grandchildren.

Services were held July 5 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. Memorial contributions may be made at lightofday.org for Parkinson’s research.
