Joan Schenkel
Joan Schenkel (nee Schotland), 87, of West Caldwell died Feb. 1, 2013. She was born in Newark and raised in Bloomfield.
Mrs. Schenkel received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania-College of Women.
She was a member of Agudath Israel of West Essex and its sisterhood for 60 years. She was a lifetime member of the National Council of Jewish Women, actively involved in WISH (Women in Self Help). She was also a lifetime member of Hadassah, and a member of Brandeis Women and O.R.T. She was president of the James Caldwell High School P.T.A. and president of the James Caldwell High School Scholarship Fund.
She was an avid reader, gardener, and Mahjong player, and enjoyed bird watching and cooking.
Predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Seymour, she is survived by her children, Howard Schenkel and his wife, Fran, of Montville; Dr. James Schenkel and his wife, Debra, of Verona; Dr. Eric Schenkel and his wife; Susan, of Bethlehem, Penn.; Barbara Mann and her husband, Kenneth, of Lafayette Hill, Penn; many grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services were held Feb. 3 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
